Backup Camera Installation: Add a Rear Camera to Almost Any Car
It happens in about two seconds. You're backing out of a tight spot on a Friday evening, you check the mirror, you turn the wheel — and you hear the crunch. A bumper. A pole. A bike that wasn't there a moment ago.
Every new car sold in the U.S. has had a backup camera since May 2018, when the federal rear-visibility rule took full effect. If your car is older than that, you're driving with a blind zone the length of a small living room behind you — and that gap can be closed in a single afternoon.
Who Needs One Most
- Trucks and lifted vehicles — the tallest blind zones on the road
- Vans and work vehicles — no rear glass at all
- Families — small children are exactly the height a mirror never shows
- Anyone parallel parking in Oakland or SF — inches matter, and bumpers are expensive
- Drivers who tow — hitching a trailer alone becomes a one-person job
Where the Picture Shows Up
You have three good options, and the right one depends on your dash:
| Display | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New touchscreen head unit | Older cars with a basic radio | Biggest, clearest view — and you gain CarPlay at the same time |
| Your existing factory screen | Cars with a screen but no camera | Integration module feeds the camera into the factory display |
| Mirror-mounted display | Work trucks and vans, budget builds | Nothing on the dash changes; picture appears in the mirror |
Camera Types We Install
- License-plate cameras — mount on the plate bracket, nearly invisible, the most common choice
- Flush-mount cameras — a small hole in the bumper for the cleanest factory look
- Tailgate and handle-replacement cameras — vehicle-specific units for trucks
- 360-degree bird's-eye systems — four cameras stitched into a top-down view for big vehicles and tight garages
- Front and side cameras — for long hoods, curbs and expensive wheels
Look for a camera with real low-light performance and a wide viewing angle. The cheap ones look fine at noon and turn to noise at night, which is exactly when you need them.
Why a Professional Install Is Worth It
A backup camera install runs a video line from the tailgate to the dash, taps reverse power correctly, and passes wiring through factory grommets so water stays outside the vehicle. Done badly, you get a picture that flickers, a trunk leak, or a camera that only works sometimes. Done properly, it looks and behaves like the factory installed it — and it's covered by our lifetime labor warranty.
Add It While the Dash Is Already Open
If you're already upgrading your stereo, this is the moment. The dash is apart, the panels are off, and adding the camera costs a fraction of doing it as a separate visit later. It pairs naturally with a CarPlay head-unit upgrade, and on premium vehicles with our factory-screen integration work.
What Does It Cost?
Camera installs are quoted by vehicle and by where the picture needs to appear. Most customers land between a simple plate-camera-to-new-screen build and a full 360 system; CarPlay and screen upgrades start at $349 installed. We'll give you the exact number before we start, and 0% APR financing is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add a camera without replacing my radio?
Usually yes. If your car has a factory screen, an integration module can feed the camera into it. If it doesn't, a mirror display is the simplest route.
Will it turn on automatically in reverse?
Yes. We wire it to the reverse circuit so the picture appears the moment you shift into reverse, then disappears when you shift out.
Do the guideline overlays move with the steering wheel?
On some systems, yes. Static guidelines are standard; dynamic guidelines require a compatible screen or camera, and we'll tell you what your car supports.
Will it leak or rust?
Not when it's sealed properly. We use factory grommets and proper sealant on every pass-through.
