Subwoofers & Amplifiers 101: Deep, Clean Bass Without Draining Your Battery
There's bass you hear, and bass you feel. The first rattles your trunk lid. The second hits clean and deep, and stays musical even at high volume. If you've ever wondered why some systems sound powerful and others just sound loud, the answer comes down to three things: the subwoofer, the amplifier and the installation.
This guide walks you through each one so you can get the bass you want without dimming headlights, a drained battery or a trunk full of rattles.
Step 1: Choose the Right Subwoofer Size
| Size | Character | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 8-inch | Tight, quick, space-saving | Compact cars, under-seat builds |
| 10-inch | Punchy and accurate | Rock, pop, all-around listening |
| 12-inch | Deep and powerful | Hip-hop, EDM, the most popular choice |
| 15-inch | Maximum low-end output | Serious bass lovers with trunk space |
Step 2: The Enclosure Matters as Much as the Sub
- Sealed enclosures deliver tight, accurate bass that blends smoothly with your music.
- Ported (vented) enclosures produce louder, deeper output for the same power.
- Custom-fabricated enclosures fit your exact vehicle, save cargo space and can look like factory work.
A premium subwoofer in the wrong box will underperform a good subwoofer in the right one. Every time.
Step 3: Match the Amplifier
Your amplifier is the engine of your system. Get these right:
- RMS power, not peak power. Match the amp's continuous (RMS) rating to the sub's RMS handling.
- Impedance. The amp must be stable at the final ohm load of your wired subwoofers.
- Class-D efficiency. Modern Class-D amps make big power with less heat and less strain on your electrical system.
Planning to power your door speakers too? A 4-channel or 5-channel amp can run your full system from one compact unit.
Step 4: Don't Starve Your System — The Big 3 Upgrade
If your headlights dim when the bass hits, your electrical system is asking for help. The Big 3 upgrade replaces three key factory cables with heavier-gauge wire:
- Alternator positive to battery positive
- Battery negative to chassis
- Engine block to chassis
The result is more stable voltage, cleaner bass and less stress on your alternator. For bigger systems, we may also recommend a high-output alternator or an AGM or lithium battery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a subwoofer drain my battery?
A properly installed system only draws power when the car is on and the system is playing. Correct wiring and, when needed, a Big 3 upgrade keep your electrical system healthy.
Can I add a sub to my factory stereo?
Yes. We use line-output converters or integration processors to add bass while keeping your factory radio.
Will I lose trunk space?
Not much, if any. Custom and vehicle-specific enclosures can tuck into side panels, under seats or behind the rear seat.
Sealed or ported, which is better?
Sealed for accuracy, ported for volume. Tell us what you listen to and we'll recommend the right match.
